March for Immigration Reform

TO:  OCA-NY Members
FROM:  Elizabeth R. OuYang, OCA-NY President
RE:  May 1st March in Support of Immigration Reform

Please join OCA-NY in marching for immigration reform on Wednesday, May 1st at 5:30 p.m. As you know, immigration reform is a top priority for the Obama Administration this year and "the Senate gang of 8" recently introduced a bill that would overhaul the current immigration system that has been in place since 1965.  There are some good parts of the bill that allows the second preference category (green card holders sponsoring for their spouse and minor children) to be treated as immediate relative petitions so they can come right away rather than wait approx. 5 years, however it eliminates the 4th preference-brother/sister category and adult children of U.S. Citizens over 30 years old.  We need to push for preserving family reunification. As you see from the attached flyer, the rally begins at 4:00 p.m. and if people can attend the rally, that's great. However , since many of us work, OCA-NY will participate formally in the march at 5:30 p.m. from Union Square to Foley Square. We will meet on the South Side at the corner of Broadway Street ACROSS from the south side of Union Square Park (the south side is where we had the one year anniversary event of Danny's death). Look for OCA-NY's banner. If interested, please contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Thank you.

As you know, President Obama has declared comprehensive immigration reform a top priority for his administration this year. And a bi-partisan group of 8 U.S. Senators, including NY's U.S. Senator Charles Schumer,  will soon introduce legislation in the Senate to deal with the status of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., visas for family petitions, and due process issues.  As you know, OCA-NY advocated for Qing Wu, a 29 year old lawful permanent resident threatened with removal from the U.S. because of an old and minor crime he committed when he was a teenager.  Because the federal law had stripped immigration judges of discretion to weigh his successful rehabilitation vs. his teenage criminal record, OCA-NY was forced to successfully advocate for a governor's pardon -which is a rare remedy.  We would like to see in the comprehensive reform package  more visas for family petitions, a pathway to citizenship for the 11 undocumented immigrants living in and contributing to the U.S. economy, and discretion restored to immigration judges.  Please join OCA-NY for this historic Town Hall Meeting to discuss the current debate on comprehensive immigration reform and to find out how you can get involved.
